This DataPack intends to further lengthen the progression of tools and armor, as well as give resources such as amethyst and copper more value. No longer will you craft a wooden pickaxe only to immediately replace it with stone, then iron, and so on. It'll take some time to even advance to Stone!

This datapack may be good for those who yearn for the "survival" aspect of the game, as well as finding satisfaction from creating tools/armor, but for the more casual players it may result in some inconveniences, ESPECIALLY when it comes to how diamond tools are required to be made.

Note: I suggest having the JEI/REI mods installed when using this DataPack, as a couple of recipes rely on the smithing table (which doesn't have a "recipe book").

Check the Gallery for a visual of the crafting/smithing recipes! If you like to provide feedback on the datapack, click on the "issues" link on the side.

When using this datapack, please make sure that any mods/other datapacks don't conflict with the crafting recipes shown here!

Expectations

With this datapack installed, here's what to expect in the long run:

  • Longer early game progression
  • Some sort of an incentive to use alternate gear (such as gold or whatever mods use)
  • Diamond tools and Armor require a visit to the Nether in order to craft
  • An incentive to explore the world, as the increased cost of tools/armor can make finding treasure tools more rewarding
  • Copper is sort of important to gameplay now!
  • Incentivizes Nether traversal, as certain gear require materials exclusively found there.

Note: This datapack only revolves around the crafting/smithing-side of things, and does not address the biggest issue to progression: Villager Trading. Either find a way to disable the generation of villages OR refrain yourself from trading with them...

Changes

NOTE: When upgrading tools/armor via the crafting table, if what you're using to upgrade is damaged or enchanted, the upgrade recipe may not be registered as "craftable" in the recipe book. However, the upgrade can still be made, you just need to manually craft it (you may lose any enchantments in the process).

Tools/Weapons
  • Stone pickaxe/sword/axe require 3 leather, 5 cobblestone (or similar), and the respective wooden tool to be crafted
  • Stone Shovel/Hoe uses a similar recipe, although the leather is now discounted to 1
  • Iron tools require 5 Copper, 1-3 Iron Ingots, and the respective stone tool to be crafted
  • Diamond tools require 5 quartz crystals, 1-3 diamonds, and the respective iron tool to be crafted
  • Shields require 2 additional blocks of Copper to be crafted

As much as I would've liked to use the smithing table for tools, it has an issue of either making a recipe dirt cheap OR too expensive. Besides, 4/5 of these tools are meant for building, and it'd be annoying to have to get a diamond block for a pickaxe all the time...

Armor
  • Leather Armor is cheaper to make, as you only need 1-3 leather and some wooden planks to craft!
  • Chainmail Armor can be crafted in the same way as any other armor, using chains and a single block of copper to craft.
  • Iron Armor requires a block of amethyst, an iron ingot, and the respective chainmail armor to upgrade via the smithing table
  • Diamond Armor requires a block of diamond, a blaze rod, and the respective iron armor to upgrade via the smithing table

Diamond Armor having maxed out defense as well as "Armor Toughness" warrants its increased cost.

Progression In The Nether

The Nether is a hostile dimension where valuable resources such as iron or diamond are incredibly scarce. Heck, depending on your luck, you may not even have access to stone right away! With this in mind, if you intend on surviving exclusively in the Nether, here's some recipes to be aware of:

  • Stone Tools use the original vanilla crafting recipes (it has to be exclusively blackstone), no need for leather here!
  • Chainmail armor can be obtained by surrounding Leather Armor with quartz on the crafting menu
  • Iron Tools/Armor requires a block of quartz, an iron ingot, and the respective chainmail armor to upgrade via the smithing table
  • The shield recipe in the Nether requires quartz blocks instead of copper blocks

As a consequence, these recipes may be relatively cheaper than in the overworld, and surely it'll be a good incentive to further explore the Nether.

Other
  • Altered the chain crafting recipe, you need an iron ingot and 2 copper ingots to craft a chain
  • You can smelt Rotten Flesh into Leather!

The recipes were made possible with TheDestruc7i0n's crafting recipe creator
